Tzedakah is the third work in Chaya Vance’s series inspired by the High Holy Day prayer, “U’Teshuva, U’Tefila, U’Tzedakah ma’avirin et ro’a hagezeirah” (“Repentance, prayer, and charity temper the severity of the decree”). Through radiant abstraction and richly layered textures, Vance reflects upon tzedakah as an act of righteousness, compassion, and shared responsibility. More than charity alone, tzedakah expresses the Jewish belief that every act of giving restores dignity, strengthens community, and helps bring greater holiness into the world.

Unlike charity, which is often understood as voluntary generosity, tzedakah is rooted in the Hebrew word tzedek, meaning justice or righteousness. It reflects the understanding that caring for others is not merely an act of kindness, but a sacred responsibility. Every gift, whether large or small, becomes a partnership in repairing the world and affirming the inherent dignity of every human being.

Vance expresses this idea through a luminous composition of warm oranges, glowing golds, earthy greens, and soft passages of light. Layers of color overlap and interact, suggesting that every act of generosity creates ripples extending far beyond the moment in which it is given. Delicate markings and textured surfaces preserve the history of the painting’s creation, echoing the cumulative effect of countless acts of goodness performed throughout a lifetime.

The abstract forms remain intentionally open, inviting viewers to contemplate their own capacity to give. Rather than illustrating a specific act of charity, the painting evokes the spirit of generosity itself—the quiet movement of the heart that seeks to uplift another person. The composition reminds us that even simple acts of compassion possess the power to illuminate the world.

As both photographer and painter, Vance is drawn to moments in which ordinary experience reveals deeper meaning. In Tzedakah, generosity becomes a form of light, quietly radiating through the composition and suggesting that what we give to others ultimately enriches us all.

Tzedakah completes the spiritual trilogy of Teshuva, Tefila, u’Tzedakah. Together, these three works reflect the timeless teaching that personal growth, sincere prayer, and compassionate action are inseparable paths toward spiritual renewal. The painting reminds us that every act of righteousness, no matter how modest, contributes to healing both the individual and the world.
