About the Artwork

The Son of G-d is a contemporary reinterpretation of René Magritte’s iconic The Son of Man, transforming one of modern art’s most recognizable images into a meditation on Jewish identity, holiness, and humanity’s relationship with the Divine.

Where Magritte concealed his figure behind an ordinary green apple, the artist replaces it with an etrog, one of Judaism’s most cherished ritual objects. Associated with the festival of Sukkot, the etrog symbolizes beauty, devotion, and the aspiration toward spiritual wholeness. It simultaneously conceals and reveals, suggesting that true spiritual identity cannot be understood through outward appearance alone.

The familiar bowler hat has likewise been transformed into a hat more closely associated with the contemporary yeshiva world. The anonymous modern businessman of Magritte’s original becomes a distinctly Jewish figure, rooted in tradition while remaining universal in his humanity.

The painting’s atmosphere also departs from Magritte’s restrained northern European palette. Brighter colors and luminous Mediterranean light imbue the work with warmth and optimism. Rather than emphasizing mystery alone, the light suggests revelation, hope, and the possibility of encountering the Divine within everyday life.

The title, The Son of G-d, deliberately invites reflection. While it echoes Magritte’s The Son of Man, it shifts the conversation from the hidden nature of human identity to the Jewish understanding that every person is created b’tzelem Elokim—in the image of G-d—and therefore possesses inherent sanctity and spiritual potential.

Like Magritte’s original, the work resists a single interpretation. Instead, it encourages viewers to consider what remains unseen: the essence of the individual, the nature of faith, and the possibility that the most profound truths are often hidden behind the familiar.
