About the Artwork

Just Married presents a symbolic landscape that explores the relationship between the physical and the spiritual. A secluded body of water winds through the landscape while towering trees frame a path toward the distance. Suspended above the scene, two balloons bearing the words "Just Married" introduce an unexpected note of hope. Through this surreal composition, Chani Cohen Zada reflects upon marriage as the sacred union through which the material and spiritual dimensions of life are brought together in harmony.

The landscape is not intended as a literal place but as a spiritual allegory. Human beings exist between two opposing forces. Our physical nature is bound to the laws of the material world, while the soul continually longs to rise above them and return to its Divine Source. The painting gives visual expression to this lifelong tension.

The enclosed body of water suggests the struggles and limitations of the physical world. Its winding form recalls a serpent, symbolizing the forces that can confine human beings within purely material existence. Left to itself, the physical world has the power to distract and even suffocate the soul's higher aspirations.

Above this enclosure float two simple balloons inscribed with the words "Just Married." Their unexpected appearance transforms the painting. Marriage is presented not merely as a personal celebration, but as a holy covenant through which two individuals unite in the service of Hashem. It is through this sacred partnership that the physical world is elevated rather than escaped.

In Jewish thought, marriage creates the foundation upon which the next generation is built. It is within the home that physical life and spiritual purpose become one, allowing the Divine presence to dwell among humanity. The balloons, light and free, suggest that holiness has the power to transcend the limitations represented below without abandoning the world itself.

Just Married ultimately presents an optimistic vision of creation. Rather than opposing the physical and the spiritual, it celebrates their union. Through marriage, family, and a life devoted to G-d's will, the material world itself becomes a vehicle for holiness, ensuring that the chain of Jewish life continues from one generation to the next.

About the Artist — Chani Cohen Zada

One of the main obstacles that a novice painter encounters when he comes to paint from observation is a conceptual conflict. This is because everything is actually made up of two things: meaning, and substance. The mind, refers to the word through its meaning for us, and not through its materiality. And therefore the painter gives an iconic interpretation of what he sees, which is not compatible with reality. It takes a lot of hours of training to teach the brain to separate these two things and pass on to the painter the relevant information for the painting, which is the material interpretation only
