Shai Azoulay, Where to
About the Artwork
Where To is a deeply personal self-portrait inspired by Shai Azoulay's childhood in Arad, where he would often wander alone through the desert in quiet contemplation. Standing beneath the vast desert sky, the solitary figure appears engaged in an intimate conversation with G-d. Through this simple yet powerful image, Azoulay transforms the landscape into a place of prayer, reflection, and spiritual searching.

At first glance, the large form above the figure appears to be a balloon. On closer observation, however, it resembles the speech bubble familiar from comic illustrations. Azoulay adopts this contemporary visual language to suggest an ongoing dialogue rather than spoken words. The figure is not speaking to another person, but entering into a private conversation with the Divine.
Within the speech bubble appears a vibrant landscape filled with trees, hills, and living color. It represents the inner world of the artist—his memories, questions, dreams, and hopes—offered upward in prayer. The words themselves remain unseen, allowing every viewer to imagine the conversation taking place. Silence becomes the language of the painting.
The work recalls the years Azoulay spent growing up in Arad, where the surrounding desert became a place of solitude and contemplation. The vast openness of the landscape encouraged moments of personal reflection that continue to influence his artistic vision. In Jewish tradition, the desert has long been understood as a place where distractions fall away and the human soul becomes more receptive to hearing the voice of G-d.
The title, Where To, expresses one of life's most enduring questions. It speaks not only of physical direction, but of the search for purpose, faith, and spiritual identity. Azoulay deliberately leaves the answer unresolved. The painting suggests that the most important journeys begin not with certainty, but with sincere questions honestly brought before Heaven.
Where To ultimately reminds us that prayer is not always found in a synagogue or within the pages of a prayer book. Sometimes it begins with a solitary walk beneath an open sky, where the landscape itself becomes part of the conversation between the human soul and its Creator.
